General Information

Scotland is a country located in the north-western part of Europe and is currently one of the constituent nations of the United Kingdom.  It has a 60 mile (96 km) land border with England to the south, with the north Channel of the Irish Sea separating it from Northern Ireland.

The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, with Glasgow its largest city.  Scotland is a striking country and is well-known for its dramatic scenery of mountains, valleys, fields and forests, with its rugged coastline. 

Scotland is a country rich in heritage and culture steeped in history, dating back thousands of years.  It consists of a mainland plus several islands, including Shetland, Orkney, and the Hebrides.  Each town and area has its own unique agenda and ceremonial customs.

There are many rivers in Scotland, the wide river estuaries known as "firths".  The Firth of Tay, Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde being the biggest.  Other rivers are the Dee, Don, Spey and Ness.  There area also a significant number of inland lakes called "lochs", which is the Scottish word for lake.  

Activities in Scotland

Not only will the pure history of this country enthral any visitor but Scotland is also home to some of the world's best and most famous golf courses, including Muirfield Village Golf Club in Gullane and St Andrews in St Andrews.

There is no denying that whiskey is the very essence of Scotland.  For many connoisseurs, Speyside is the heartland of Scotland's malt industry, the home of Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, and the birthplace of many other world renowned whiskies.  There are quite a large number of distilleries that offer guides and tours.

Hiking, wildlife and winter sports are all part of what visitors to Scotland can experience.  Around Loch Ness in the north of the Highlands, there is always the hunt for the Monster to keep visitors entertained!

Although not being known for its sunshine, Scotland offers visitors a warm welcome with its wonderful diversity of places, landscapes and experiences.  There is a great tradition of festivals here e.g the Edinburgh Festival, literature and achievements in the arts.
