Yacht Crew Events: What's On in the South of France in 2016?

Working on a yacht in the Mediterranean can involve long hours, hard work and extended periods away from your friends and family. However, the upside of this busy vocation is that crews become close-knit teams that often forge strong bonds and establish lifelong friendships. Enjoying free time with your new friends is one of the many highlights of yacht crew jobs. When you get a rare day or week off to relax, visit one of these events to make the most of this summer’s busy schedule in the South of France.


Yacht Shows and Regattas

Summer on the Riviera is always exciting and along with the glitz and glamour of superyacht season, it’s a great arena to socialise with like-minded people. There are lots of opportunities to mix business with pleasure at one of the many yacht festivals in the region.

Cannes Yachting Festival (6th–11th September 2016)

The Cannes Yachting Festival is one of the largest in-water boat shows in Europe and an important event for the yachting industry. The beautiful Bay of Cannes is filled with luxury yachts and buzzes with energy as more than 500 vessels are showcased, including world premieres. An Exhibitors’ Reception is traditionally held on the Friday of the event at 8pm for all those with a ticket. It’s a relaxed place to mingle and meet industry insiders and other crewmembers.

Monaco Yacht Show (28th September-1st October 2016)

The Monaco Yacht Show is one of the most prestigious shows in the yachting calendar. It’s extremely upmarket and yachts must be at least 25m in length to participate, which makes it the largest floating display of megayachts in Europe. Home of the legendary MYS Captains’ Ball, an invitation-only party and a black tie affair; it’s one of the hottest tickets in town and nearly impossible to access. However, theCaptains’ Hideout is a refuge for superyacht Captains and crew where they can professionally network away from the stress of the yacht show. Complimentary meals and refreshments are on offer as well as free high-speed internet access and daily gifts, competitions and prizes.

Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez (24th September-2nd October)

For a week at the end of September, the Golfe de Saint Tropez swells with a fleet of classic sailing yachts as Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez wows spectators and seafarers alike. Admire up to 330 of the finest sailing yachts on the water, as the prestigious international regatta covers approximately 900 nautical miles around the Mediterranean. Established in 1981, Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez regularly attracts strong crowds and never disappoints; even when particularly bad weather necessitates the cancellation of a race or two, the spirit that surrounds the event is never dampened. After a series of races, competitors are rewarded at a crew brunch. The regatta is also a great networking and socialising event for crewmembers.


Professional Development and Networking Events


ACREW (28th-30th September 2016)

There are also events for seafarers who are interested in career development.ACREW is a specialist international event organiser for yacht crews, which currently has over 7,000 members, including more than 2,000 captains. It has established a fantastic reputation for offering free workshops, discussion groups and social activities at events in yacht shows, shipyards and marinas. These events are great for both newcomers and established crew looking for courses to give them added value and enhance their skills.ACREW has a series of events that coincide with the Monaco Yacht Show, where the company will offer yacht crew advice and workshops. Participants can also expect a friendly atmosphere in which to network and socialise.

Yachts du Coeur (18th September 2016)

The Yachts du Coeur event is fun in the name of charity. A fleet of yachts will harbour in Port Canto, Cannes, and donate food to those in need. The event offers the opportunity to network with other yacht crews, have fun and provide supplies for those in need. Since 2010, approximately 20 tons of food has been collected by the charity. Crews were even joined by a pod of dolphins in 2015!




Nice Jazz Festival 2016 (16th to 20th July 2016)

The internationally acclaimed Nice Jazz Festival will once again bring the coastal city to life, imbuing Nice with a melodic theme tune between 16th and 20th July. In 2015, over 60,000 spectators attended the festival over the course of the event, making it the most visited edition ever. This year is set to be bigger still, with an exceptionally high quality ilk of acts performing: Laura Mvula, Massive Attack, The Cinematic Orchestra, George Clinton, The London Community Gospel Choir and Melody Gardot, to name but a few.

Summer Evenings (from 25th June to 18th September 2016)

Between June and September, 155 towns and villages will offer over 400 free musical performances aspart of the Summer Evenings series of concerts. From philharmonic brass ensembles to jazz bands, pop, rock and rock’n’roll, the Summer Evenings concerts are sure to brighten the already glorious evenings in the South of France. View performances in Theoule-sur-mer, Biot, Gourdon, Cap d-Ail, and a host of other alluring destinations along the coast.

With so many events that enable crewmembers to socialise, network and have fun during the summer season, you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to experience both events in the world of yachting and other cultural events to best experience the cultural richness of the Cote d’Azur. In the process, you’re guaranteed to make lasting memories and new friendships.
